Paddy's Bar (Before the action . . .) With an
11pm curfew it is difficult to find parking at
Paddy's from around 9 to 10:30.
Paradise: The Beach at River Number 2, just down from
Freetown. Low clouds hung over the mountains
and even the UNAMSIL guard (complete with a large
pile of assault rifles stacked next to him)
seemed to be enjoying the occasion.

I would love to hike over the mountains in the center
of the peninsula. Maybe some day . . .
The vehicle park at River Number 2 on a Sunday Afternoon.
It is about a 45 minute drive over rough roads from
Freetown.
Road Work
Kids repair the main road between Freetown and River
Number2. It was damaged during the
rains and the kids hope for handouts from passing
motorists for their efforts.
Of course they have an early warning lookout who lets
them know when cars are coming so they only
have to look busy some of the time. We do this
in the office a lot as well . . .
If you look carefully you can see their stick "checkpoint"
barrier across the road behind them. If
there is one thing I will remember about Sierra Leone,
it is the numerous checkpoints everywhere.

in Aberdeen.
I took this photo while visiting the Mammy Yoko for
an interview with a UN Official.
Actually, I didn't get close enough to estimate the
damage, but I'm told the restaurant was
totally destroyed. The rumors around Freetown
were that employees may have set the
fire, the owner has a somewhat caustic reputation
(I never really met him).
Star Beer Advertisement. I'm surprised there
is any left after my visit . . .
